Wedding rings are a symbol of the never ending love a man and a woman have for each other. They are the perfect picture of a unique union between two people willing to go through the troubles and pleasures of forming a family together. Contemporary wedding rings are simply modern designs.

Just because a wedding ring is new does not mean it is contemporary. A jeweler can make a perfect new replica of a vintage ring, and it does not become a contemporary ring. It continues to be considered a vintage ring.

Contemporary rings are a combination of new metal alloys, new diamond shapes and new and intricate details all woven together to form a beautiful ring. These rings were impossible to create in bygone years because the technology was not available. There are so many possible combinations that the styles that can be created are virtually endless.

The four components that make up contemporary wedding rings are the metals, the stones, the details and the settings. Although clear diamonds have been the accepted stone for wedding rings down over the years, some couples are using stones such as the cubic zirconia or the moissanite. They are high quality stones that look like a diamond and that can be purchased at a fraction of the cost.

The popular number of stones for contemporary rings is three. They can be offset by other smaller stones if the bride-to-be prefers. In a contemporary design, smaller stones are also being used in the wedding band.

Silver, gold and platinum have long been the choice metals for wedding rings. Today, couples are opting more for a combination of metals to create designs with two tones. Celtic rings are a perfect example of combining metals in order to emphasize their beautiful knot designs.

With the technology available today, jewelers are constantly creating new settings for wedding rings. Couples often prefer these settings because they are not like anything that has been made in the past. Pave settings, half-bezel settings and invisible settings are all examples of settings on contemporary rings.

New and intricate details also play a major part in contemporary wedding sets. Couples have had their rings engraved for years, but the laser engravers that are used today allow a jeweler to use smaller and clearer letters. This allows the couple to express much more on the inside of their rings. Some jewelers are also doing exterior engraving on the ring and in some special cases on the diamond itself.

Contemporary wedding rings hold all of the traditional sentiment and meaning of the traditional rings from the past. They have become a statement of off with the old and on with the new. Many couples enjoy the opportunity to wear rings styled in new and fashionable ways.
